Definitions
Lesbian: a term used to describe a woman who has a preference for other women both sexually and emotionally.
Gay: a generic term applied to men or women who have a preference both emotionally and sexually for people of the same sex. It is usually applied to men but more and more women are using it too.
Bisexual: a term used to describe a man or woman who has a preference both sexually and emotionally for people of both the same and opposite sex.
Homosexual: a term used to describe the preference of both men and women for people of the same sex. It is usually used to describe gay men and exclude lesbians. It isn’t widely used within the lesbian, gay, and bisexual communities.
Heterosexual: a term used to describe a person who has a preference both emotionally and sexually to people of the opposite sex to themselves.
Sexual Orientation: refers to the gender preferred by someone in the choice of partner both sexually and emotionally.
Sexuality: describes different aspects of our personality, identity, emotions, preferences, sexual orientation, and sexual practices.
Heterosexism: is used to describe the way in which everyone is assumed to be heterosexual. It assumes that heterosexuality is the only way to have a relationship. Heterosexism is a form of prejudice, which individuals as well as institutions can practice.
Homophobia: a term used to describe anti-gay feelings. These feelings take the form of fear and/or hatred. Some heterosexual people are homophobic but it can also be applied to some lesbian, gay, and bisexual people who repress their feelings of being lesbian, gay, or bisexual.
